PREN for various Grades of Stainless Steel

What is PREN?

Pitting resistance equivalent numbers (PREN) are a theoretical way of comparing the pitting corrosion resistance of various types of stainless steels, based on their chemical compositions. In general, the higher PREN-value, the more resistant is the stainless steel to localized pitting corrosion by chloride. The elements which have a significant impact are chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen.

The formula used to calculate PREN is as below:

PREN = %Cr + 3.3(%Mo) + 16(%N)

PREN = 1 × %Cr + 3.3 (%Mo + 0.5 × %W) + 16 × %N

Alternative Grades to Stainless Steel 304 Grade

301L	A higher work hardening rate grade is required for cerrtain rool formed or stretch formed component
302HQ	Lower work harding  rate is needed for cold forging of screws, bolts and rivets
303	Higher mechnaibilty needed, and the lower corrosion resistanc, formabilty and weldability are accaptable
316	Higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is required, in chloride environments.
321	Better resistance to temperatures of around 600-900°C is needed…321 has higher hot strenghth.
3CR12	A lower cost is required, and the reduced  corrrosion resistance and resulting discolouration are accceptable.
430	A lower case is required, and the reduced corrosion resistance and fabrication characteristic are acceptable.
