PREN for various Grades of Stainless Steel

What is PREN?

Pitting resistance equivalent numbers (PREN) are a theoretical way of comparing the pitting corrosion resistance of various types of stainless steels, based on their chemical compositions. In general, the higher PREN-value, the more resistant is the stainless steel to localized pitting corrosion by chloride. The elements which have a significant impact are chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen.

The formula used to calculate PREN is as below:

PREN = %Cr + 3.3(%Mo) + 16(%N)

PREN = 1 × %Cr + 3.3 (%Mo + 0.5 × %W) + 16 × %N

Alternative Grades to Stainless Steel 316 Grade

Features
303 Stainless steel 303 grade can be used when higher machinability is needed, and lower corrosion resistance, formability and weldability are acceptable.
316 Stainless steel 316 grade can be used when higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is required, in chloride environments.
321 Stainless steel 321 grade can be used when better resistance to temperatures of around 600-900°C is needed. 321 has higher hot strength.
3CR12 Stainless steel 3CR12 can be used when lower cost is required, and the reduced corrosion resistance and resulting discoloration are acceptable.
430 Stainless steel 430 grade is acceptable when a lower cost is required, and the reduced corrosion resistance and fabrication characteristic are acceptable.
