What is Stainless Steel?

Stainless steel is an alloy of Iron with a minimum of 10.5% Chromium. Chromium produces a thin layer of oxide on the surface of the steel known as the ‘passive layer’. This prevents any further corrosion of the surface. Increasing the amount of Chromium gives an increased resistance to corrosion.

Stainless steel also contains varying amounts of Carbon, Silicon and Manganese. Other elements such as Nickel and Molybdenum may be added to impart other useful properties such as enhanced formability and increased corrosion resistance.

Stainless steels are most notable for their corrosion resistance, which increases with increasing chromium content. Additions of molybdenum increase corrosion resistance in reducing acids and against pitting attack in chloride solutions. Thus, there are numerous grades of stainless steel with varying chromium and molybdenum contents to suit the environment the alloy must endure. Stainless steel’s resistance to corrosion and staining, low maintenance, and familiar luster make it an ideal.

Stainless steel differs from carbon steel by amount of chromium present. Carbon steel rusts when exposed to air and moisture. This iron oxide film is active and accelerates corrosion by forming more iron oxide. Stainless steels have sufficient amount of chromium present so that a passive film of chromium oxide forms which prevents further corrosion.

What are the Advantages of Using Stainless Steel?

Stainless steel is one of the most widely used industrial metal for corrosion resistant applications. Though it has a high upfront cost compared to carbon steel and mild steel, that cost is spread out over a longer lifespan. This makes stainless steel a more economical choice in the long run. Stainless steels durability and low maintenance also make it the best material to use. Other advantages to choosing stainless steel are:

  • Stainless Steel is Durable in NatureStainless is durable because it has anti-corrosive properties, due to presence of chromium and other alloying elements. The percentage of chromium and alloying elements such as nickel and molybdenum determines how resistant the steel is to corrosive environments. Lower percentages will work well in wet environments while higher percentages are required for acidic or alkaline environments.
  • Stainless Steel is 100% RecyclableThe strength or quality of stainless steel is not compromised when it is recycled. This is the reason why most of the companies use stainless steel scrap for producing finished products.
  • Stainless Steel is Clean and Hygienic – Stainless steel is very hygienic making it perfect for use in hospitals, food processing equipment’s, kitchens, or anywhere where hygiene is of the utmost importance.
  • Stainless Steel Exhibits Excellent Heat Resistant Properties – Stainless steel’s resistance to high temperatures makes it a popular choice for various heat exchangers, boilers, valves, and other applications where high levels of heat are present. Asiamet is a leading supplier of stainless steel products to heat exchanger and boiler manufacturers.
  • Stainless Steel has High Strength-to-Weight Ratio – With higher grades, there is a significant strength-to-weight advantage that allows for less material to be used to achieve the same result as lower grades of stainless steel and other metals.
